Shades of Nature – Fighting Fish Gilded Silver Coin
The fascinating possibilities and level of detail achieved by laser engraving are clearly displayed on this coin showing a Siamese fighting fish in silver against a gold background.
Siamese fighting fish have been bred in Japan for centuries. That's because the often colorful males, with their glamorous fins, are status symbols, and it is tradition to present these fish at exhibitions or competitions. Today, the Siamese fighting fish are typically pets in aquariums and valued worldwide. Yet, one should bear in mind that these fish are very territorial and always ready to fight, just as their name suggests.
Just as the earlier issues of this series (bee and butterfly), the 2016 coin dedicates itself to the special details that make up the characteristic shape of the fish. Thanks to the precision laser engraving and the Smartminting technology, a previously unseen interaction of finesse and high relief is created. It seems as if the fighting fish is literally jumping out of the coin. Yet, the interplay of partial gold plating, matte surface finish and silver also plays a role in this outstanding result.
